Golden Days Now Autumns Here! Simple Eye Shadow Looks Using Gold

I’m really loving gold recently so much so I feel like standing up and saying ‘Hi, I’m Fiona, and I have a gold make up problem’.  I buy it, and look at it like Golum and his infamous ring, feeling it’s too precious to use or I won’t have the occasion to wear it.

So in response to Aine who took part in my MAC Golden Gaze give away, and asked me to do some gold eyeshadow looks using Golden Gaze, I thought I would show some looks using others golds instead, just in case you don’t get your hands on the lovely Golden Gaze.

Gold to me is usually an occasion colour but I really wanted to do a day time look with them, something really simple, quick to do, and easy to wear.  I’d love to have had a young model to work on to do these, as the quality of my eyelid skin is not great for shimmery eyeshadows, that’s age for you!!  I did a Gold and Green and a Gold and Pink eye shadow look. Would You Paint Your Tongue To Match Your Lipstick?

In the new Jessie J video ‘who’s laughing now’ Jessie plays several characters, a very sexy librarian type school teacher with the most amazing horn rimmed glasses, and canteen dinner lady with heaps of gold jewelry that would put Mr T to shame, and a cleaner minus makeup and sporting a large mop of curly hair, honestly you wouldn’t know it was Jessie J.  But I had to do a double take in the scenes were Jessie J ‘plays’ her adult self, her tongue is bright pink, I mean seriously vivid cerise pink.

Coordinating Lips and Tongue!!!

Now I don’t know if Jessie has been slurping down raspberry Mr. Freeze cool pops or if there is something else at play, but the fact that her tongue matches her lipstick so perfectly looks like a conscious deliberate act.  No ones tongue is that colour ordinarily.  I wonder what she used to do it, food colouring perhaps???  It’s an interesting look to match your tongue to your lipstick?  Do you think it will catch on?

Regarding the song itself, I like it but I can’t help thinking it sounds like a coup of chickens at the start. 🙂 Check out Jessie J’s video on youtube and see just how crazy pink her tongue is towards the end of the video.

Drop Dead Gorgeous!

Final act of self expression by IllasquamaDo you have your makeup plan organized for your funeral yet?  Sorry I hope you haven’t just sprayed your computer screen with coffee or choked on the sandwich you were eating, I nearly did when I read that Illamasqua and Leverton & Sons (UK based eight generation family funeral directors) are offering a unique service that encourages people for whom make-up is an intimate part of their identity to plan their ‘final transformation’ – one that pays tribute to who they were in life and how they want to enter the afterlife …The Final Act of Self Expression as they call it.

“Illamasqua encourages people to self-express and embrace their alter ego in every way – why should this be any different when you pass away? It is a celebration of life, and one that should be indulged for your last glamorous look….To wear the most fabulous make-up applied by a professionally trained make-up artist for your final journey is the ultimate statement of celebration.” from the Illamasqua blog

I have a few issues with this entire concept:

  1. I hope not to die until I’m really really old and it will be inevitable that I will have my fair share of wrinkles and sagging skin and will probably look like a right old bag at that stage, but I can’t imagine that anything I would pick now for a makeup plan for my dead face for the future would still be suitable or fashionable in 60 or 70 years time!!  And the thoughts of doing a make up plan just in case you die young or in the next few years is just too awful and horrific a thought for anyone to contemplate. Do Blondes Have More Fun?

Me After Taaz.com Makeover

I don’t know the answer to that question but I can tell you this blonde wasn’t having fun today in fact I was a bit bored today, and I wondered what I might look like if I dyed my hair from blonde to brown – well they do say the devil will find work for idle hands to do!!  But I didn’t want to make a costly mistake by actually physically doing it and maybe hating it, I mean I wasn’t that kind of bored!  Anyway I stumbled across taaz.com and ended up spending 2 hours playing with different looks. Alright, so my face looks soooo ridiculously artificial in the photo and I very much doubt I’d really look anything close to that with dark hair, but it sure was fun to try it on.

It works like this: You sign in, create an account and go into ‘Makeover’ you then upload a photograph of yourself and it allows you to select celebrity hair styles to try on and different makeup looks, it even allows you to whiten your teeth, plump up your lips, change your eye colour with coloured contacts, reshape your eyebrows and a host of other really fun things, and if you really like the make up if also tells you what brand/style/colour you have selected with a link to purchase – okay so the links bring you to sites that are all in the USA but you can take notes on anything you really like and find your local supplier.

It’s so much fun!! I swear, you’ll feel like a five year old in wellington boots jumping in puddles; you just want to keep doing it and you’ll never get tired of it.

Taaz.com also has lots of great product reviews and tips and hints on makeup and beauty.

But be warned don’t visit this site when in work unless the boss is out and you have a good bit of time to kill.

Bridal Makeup Looks

If you are looking for some inspiration for bridal makeup looks I would recommend you visit Estee Lauder’s website that shows 4 beautiful looks for your special day; natural, classic, dramatic, and romantic.

I have a real and genuine love of Estee Lauder when it comes to bridal makeup.  For my own wedding, instead of hiring a makeup artist I decided to do my own, like a lot of people do.  So I visited a few makeup counters and booked some makeovers, letting the SA know that if I was happy with the look and advice I was going to buy all my wedding makeup from them.  I settled on Estee Lauder, I think it was DoubleWear that sealed the deal for me at the time!  Enjoy trying out the Estee Lauder bridal looks!

1970’s Makeup Inspiration

Farrah Fawcett 1970's beauty icon

Farrah Fawcett

Well it seems that the 1970’s glamour isn’t going to be leaving us any time soon, so if you’re diggin’ the 70’s vibe (sorry couldn’t help myself) then don’t forget about your makeup.  How about taking some inspiration from the beauty icons of the day namely; Farrah Fawcett, Alli McGraw, and Jerry Hall.

Okay so maybe forget about some of the hairdo’s!

How to get the look:

To really relive the 70’s look ala Farrah Fawcett a peachy coral based lipstick and blush colour are essential, all of which are very on trend at the moment.  For blush, I like MAC Tenderling, and ELF Mineral Blush powder ‘Bliss’, layered on top of each other.  For lippy, well I’m in a bit of a thrifty mood so I’m liking Superdrugs MUA shade 7 and 11 mixed together.  I really don’t like shade 7 on it’s own it just too peachy for my complexion but would be lovely on someone who had darker skin. Backstage at YSL: No Lip, Please

I am completely in love with the pared back look at the YSL fall 2011 show, read about how it came to be at makeup.com ‘Backstage at YSL: No Lip, Please‘.  ‘Eyes were softly defined with brown shadow (Eyeshadow Duo in No. 1 Heavenly Beige-Astral Brown) and brown mascara (Volume Effets Faux Cils in No. 2 Rich Brown), then brows were pumped up and slightly darkened with pencil and powder. And it took a mix of three lip colors—Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in No. 10 Beige Tribute, Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in No. 36 Coral Legend (out this fall), and Golden Gloss in No. 11 Golden Whisper—to create the fleshy pink lips.’

A difficult look to pull off if your skin is not perfect, particularly in the harsh Irish winter months, but it’s so lovely to see such fresh natural looking beauty.  Got to give it a go!

Lock Up Your Lippie Ladies!

So Steven Gerard, Jenson Button and Jonny Wilkinson have all worn makeup applied by Gary Cockerill, Makeup Artist and GBF to Jordan, according to The Sun Newspaper 18th May 2011.  Steven Gerard apparently wore some for his wedding but in what context Button and Wilkinson have worn makeup, I don’t know, they didn’t say.  And apparently Gary Cockerill is developing a line of men’s makeup.  I don’t know about you but I know the last thing I want when I kiss my husband is to be worrying about his shade of lipstick mixing with mine!  Or have him say ‘oh be careful not to smudge my lippie’  – what?!?  No I just can’t see it.  My man is not the macho, hairy chest, full of bravado, sporty fan, he’s more of an intellectual, science geek, mixed with the enthusiasm of a young red setter, who does the bins, cleans drains and kills spiders for me and he baulks at the idea of mankup (my word for man makeup)!  Read the rest of this entry »

Eurovision Winners Party Makeup

Okay, so I’ve officially got Eurofever!!  Very excited about watching on Saturday!! Come on Jedward! Bring the Eurovision home!!!

If you are hosting a Eurovision party this weekend and cheering on Jedward – rather than dressing up like Jedward (bridge too far for me!) then how about an Irish winners themed party, the girls could come dressed as Dana (1970) or Linda Martin (1992), the guys can even dress up in a white boiler suit reminiscent on Johnny Logan ‘Hold me now’ (1980 + 1987).  My favourite makeup look would have to be the 80’s for the sheer fun of it! (Confession:  I am a child of the 80’s!!)  Read the rest of this entry »
